Brandeis hosts concert for Waltham students

by Emily Sweeney

As part of a new partnership between the Waltham public schools and Brandeis University, the acclaimed Lydian String Quartet held a concert for fifth-graders from James Fitzgerald and Northeast elementary schools last Friday.

Students gathered at the Slosberg Rectial Hall at Brandeis and listened to music by Beethoven, Shostakovich, and Duke Ellington, and then asked the musicians questions about music. Before the concert, teachers crafted lessons introducing students to the historical and cultural background of music.

The pilot program was developed by violinist Judith Eissenberg, a founding member of the Lydian String Quartet. A second concert, featuring two musicians from Africa, is planned for next month.
